Warmer temperatures and abundant sunshine bring second homeowners and vacationers back to the island. Despite the idyllic nature of the island during this time, the struggles that year-round Nantucket residents face do not disappear.
Local food programs need your support more than ever before. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is cutting back $1 billion in funding to schools and food banks. At the same time, congressional committees are looking to slash $230 billion from the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP). According to the USDA SNAP Data for 2024,1,113,700 SNAP Massachusetts participants would be at risk of losing some or all of their benefits.
Currently, our food insecurity programs still have waitlists in the hundreds, and that number is only going to increase. Your support now will ensure that, despite these federal setbacks, we will be able to provide local resources to as many residents as possible. Additional funding will secure food, expand program capacity, and serve our neighbors in need.
